Description
| "Mean and Median Medals" (public beta version) is a stand-alone application (not an embedded web page applet) for learning the basics of statistical sampling and includes histogram plotting and the calculation of the mean and median. It uses a directed activity approach instead of the ever popular game format. |

Installation
The application has been implemented using Java. To run it on your platform of choice, you need to have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) software installed on your computer. The JRE can be obtained from Sun MicroSystems.
Here is how to get it running:
- From this web page download the archive most suited to your platform; .tgz for unix, , .hqx for Mac and .zip for Windows.
- Unpack the archive. Just double clicking on the downloaded file should start this process. You should get a folder with the following files/folders inside it:
-
objectives
-
flagDropper.jar
-
flags_small
-
2000 olympic gold medals.txt
-
flags_small_disabled
-
Instructions.rtf
-
dataset
-
Images
-
Exploration.rtf
- Just double click on the flagDropper.jar file to see if it runs. If it does then the JRE is already installed on your machine. You can then use the application directly.
- If the .jar file fails to run, download then run the installer for the JRE. Once the installation is successful try double clicking the flagDropper.jar file again. Hopefully all should be well.
The application can be customised by changing the text in the .rtf files. As an ex-teacher myself I know how teachers like to fiddle with these things. So go mad and make up your own activities based on the latest and greatest educational theories.
The intellectual property in this application is protected by Copyright. This means I am giving you a license to use it but that you don't own it. This is how the law works. The application is Freeware which means you don't have to pay money for it.
Requirements
Should run on all Java Application Platforms.
Tested on MacOS X (10.2 and 10.3) and Windows XP and Windows 98 (I think).
Development Environment
Borland JBuilder on MacOS X (Panther). I used the trial version available here... The IDE works fine on a Mac Cube, except that the compiler did not like another project which had circular method dependancies.
Credits
This application was commissioned by the statistics teaching staff at Swinburne Lilydale. The concept came from Kay Lipson and Sue Kokonis while the detailed requirements were set out by Immag.
This software is provided to the wider public as a gesture of goodwill in return for the many contributions made by others in the development of statistical software.
